Books For Kids- Un Pulpo:
Dia de los Muertos Project:
Dia de los Muertos means "Day of the Dead." It is celebrated November 1st and 2nd. It is both All Saint's Day and All Souls Day. Families gather together to celebrate their deceased loved ones, honoring them with an altar. These altars may consist of sugar skulls, chocolate, marigolds, candles and photos. They believe that their loved ones will travel back on this special night. It is celebrated in Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Guatemala, and in Mexican-American communities in the United States. It can originally be traced back to the Aztecs.
For my altar, I chose to honor Virginia Shirley, my grandmother (abuela). I learned a lot about her during this project, because I reached out to my dad to get information, because I had never met her myself. I selected the traditional items for an altar- papel picado, paper flowers, candles, photos, and a sugar skull. I also included my paragraph (in Spanish) that I wrote about her, and an art piece. At the exhibition, I had two jobs- setup and face painting.
I had a lot of fun at the exhibition, I got to paint faces and eat traditional foods. I learned a lot of Spanish in this project, because I had to write my paragraph in Spanish. I also learned about the holiday of Dia de los Muertos. I felt pretty good about my project, it looked nice and my art piece turned out well.
