While I think this issue is extremely important and I do have a connection to it as an athlete, female, and human, I don’t feel as if I took out of this project everything I hoped to when I came into it. I am passionate about issues affecting athletes (especially female athletes), however, I can think of several that connect even more to climbing and my own life that I could have chosen to study. In addition, I am really interested in international issues, which I didn’t choose to focus on.
I am not in love with any particular senior project idea at this moment, which makes it very difficult for me to analyze exactly how this will relate. I am obviously interested in these issues to some extent, however, I don’t feel enough to dedicate an entire semester to them. I do think I have strengths as a writer, should I choose to take that route as an action project.
The most important thing I learned from this project that I can bring to my senior project is TIME MANAGEMENT!! This is something I have struggled with for years, and still haven’t been able to resolve. Time and time again I have subjected myself to unnecessary stress and panic over deadlines I had plenty of time to meet. While I may be able to “wing” something a little smaller, a project as important as senior project cannot be done the night before it is due. I now know that it is more relevant than ever that I work on this procrastination problem.
The most important part of this project was the research that I did, I actually really enjoyed reading some of these articles, and thinking critically about these issues. Most notable was the Outside magazine article about Caroline Gleich, and the Wikipedia rabbit hole I went down trying to learn about the different waves of feminism.
As mentioned previously… I don’t feel as if the work I did for this project is of a quality I can be proud of due to poor time management on my part. A part of that may be due to missing school from circumstances out of my control, however, the majority of it I was absolutely responsible for. I think spending just a little bit more time on each aspect of this project could have given me something I was more excited to show off.
